Today was a day of pleasant surprises! (For unpleasant: See Mokke review) Here, I was expecting some fanservice-y, piece of crap that puts Kendo to shame. You know what!? I didn’t see a single tit pop out or a panty flash anywhere in here. OH HAPPY DAY~ Something I really, genuinely like. You know why!? Because it had a nice amount of humor as well as some shamble of a plot. *Is crying a little in joy*

Just for this, I have some links. This blog provides some excellent Kendo Terms  and a lovely little article on Bamboo Blade characters.

The episode starts off at the Kendo club at Muroe Private High School’s Kendo club. Seems that all the old members have left or dropped out leaving only the instructor, Ishida “Kojirou” Toraji, and the new Kendo Captian, Chiba Kirino. Hard times have hit Koijirou-sensei. He’s absolutely broke and pretty damn morose about it.

However, one night as he was drinking with his buddy and rival kendo teacher, Ishibashi Kenzaburou, he makes a bet. That if his girls could beat Kenzaburou’s then he would get to eat free for a year. Eating free for a year really saves a lot of money you know.

Koujirou is determined to build a strong army of girls, even turning away male Kendo members int he process. However, Kirino makes him let in Nakata Yuuji and his friend Eiga Danjuurou which are both males. This works out pretty good since (unexpectedly) Eiga has a girlfriend who needs to join a club.

Later that evening, in a humorous turn of events, three different balls and a sensei come flying out towards Koujirou and Kirino. With the quick strokes of a broom stick a quiet girl is able to knock them all away (sending the sensei back into the window from whence he fell). Koujirou is absolutely determined to have her in his kendo club. She declines. He stalks her. Turns out she is Kawazoe Tamaki, daughter of a Kendo master.

The next day it turns out Eiga has a very attractive girlfriend, but that’s not really important. Koujirou tries to convince Nakata to recruit Tamaki. That doesn’t work, not that he even asks her. They turn out to be childhood friends though. The next day we meet a bully Toyama who isn’t currently a member of the Kendo club, but was once.

He sees Eiga using a Bokken improperly and suddenly starts beating on him. Meanwhile, Kirino is trying to recruit Tamaki in her own way, by dragging her there. They see Toyama beating up on Eiga. Tamaki doesn’t….seem…to…like…this. The episode ends. But she seems pissed.

Yookay! Where episode one left off is where we pick up. After a little intro from Yukiatsu’s cheerful friend Kumoshichi. These two beasties are known as Youi and instead of, you know, killing the humans, they end up fighting with each other. Both of them dematerialized, but apparently aren’t dead.

Yukiatsu runs off and falls through a loose plank into the river. Shotty feudal japan planks -_- Anyway, he’s picked up by the South Edo Magistrate members who had sent Saizo, Abi, and Edo to find him. The talk to Yukiatsu about joining the Bansha Aratamesho to fight these Youi, but Yukiatsu is unsure. Probably because he’s been running from this otherworld that the demons come from.

Oh, that reminds me. Saizo, that strapping young samurai with the paper fan? Yeah. Much like Edo, he’s a trap too. Saizo is a girl.

AGAIN. Outa. That little floater child runs off to that trash heap. People need to put a fence around that or something. We get to see a little flash back about Outa being chosen as a sacrifice to the Mountain God (that Dinosaur looking beasty). However, his father chickened out. This angered said mountain god and now he follows Outa, looking to take back his sacrifice.

We find out as Yukiatsu’s powers awaken again that Outa’s father was absorbed into the mountain god. As his powers further awaken Yukiatsu materialized twin axes, and they are oh-so-cool. The two axes form into one golden axe and deliver the fatal blow to the mountain god.

It was a fun episode, I liked it. It feels, sort of…you know. Plain. But since no new Shigurui episodes come out for awhile, and I have a lot of down time between Fall 07 releases, I guess I’ll keep watching.
